Siwes Internship Exposure Tour: From BICD to HealthMedic Support Initiatives
As part of the SIWES Internship Exposure Tour organised by the Bureau for International Cooperation and Development, interns visited HealthMedic Support Initiatives (HMSI) to gain practical exposure to the operations of a health-focused development and humanitarian organisation.
The visit provided an opportunity for the interns to move beyond theoretical learning and gain firsthand knowledge of how development organisations design, coordinate, implement, and document interventions aimed at addressing the needs of vulnerable and underserved communities.
The exposure was particularly valuable in helping the interns understand the relationship between health, humanitarian action, programme management, organisational development, and community-focused interventions.
The exposure tour achieved its intended objectives. The interns were able to gain practical insight into different aspects of the humanitarian and development sector, particularly in relation to health interventions, programme delivery, organisational management, and community-focused development.
The visit also provided an opportunity for meaningful interaction between the interns and the HMSI team, allowing them to ask questions, share perspectives, and connect academic knowledge with real-world practice.
The experience will contribute to their ability to properly document and reflect on their learning as they prepare their SIWES reports.
The SIWES exposure visit to HealthMedic Support Initiatives was a valuable learning experience that bridged the gap between academic knowledge and professional practice. It demonstrated that effective development work requires more than good ideas; it requires strategic planning, strong partnerships, effective management, community participation, accountability, and a clear commitment to impact.
HealthMedic Support Initiatives appreciates the opportunity to contribute to the professional development of the interns and looks forward to continued collaboration with BICD in creating meaningful learning and development opportunities for young professionals.
